To Eat: Char-Grill
A North Carolina classic, Char-Grill has been providing hamburger happiness since 1959 when the first one opened on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.
The experience is consistent and one of a kind: Walk up to the window. Fill out your order ticket. Stick it through the slot, and after a couple flames and few minutes, out comes your custom, made-to-order hot, deliciousness.
Although the times have changed and the prices have gone up a little bit, the simple menu has endured through the years. You can get the same made-to-order burgers, thick chocolate milkshakes and fries that somehow strike the perfect ratio of grease to salt. In my opinion, the best part of getting your grub on at Char-Grill is sitting on the picnic tables enjoying some serious people watching and anxiously anticipating the next time flames emerge from the charcoal grill in the kitchen.
Since USA Today named Char-Grill as one of America’s 51 Great Burger Joints, I wish I had some awesome food pictures to show you. But (un?)fortunately, it was so tasty that by the time I pulled out my camera all that was left were these soft drinks…Yes, it was that good!
Now with six locations, you can appreciate the vintage 1960′s ambiance and custom orders of Char-Grill from picnic benches across the Triangle. Char-Grill is on Twitter at @Char_Grill. I recommend that you go try it today!
